Football and softball highlight weekend sports

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re inside Sports Monday.

The Yabra Sporting Club of Belize City went inside M.C.C. Grounds yesterday with its back against the wall, needing a win desperately against Juventud Benquena to move on to the semi-final round of the Belize Football League Knock-Out Tournament.

Last week it was Juventud with the 3-1 victory and they looked very confident at the kick-off yesterday. In fact it’s Jube looking for first blood with this kick off the left wing but Stanley Reneau makes a big time save. In response Yabra is immediate and effective. Albert Hoare finds Emory Nunez who outruns the defense for a pretty left foot goal. Three minutes later it’s still Yabra on the offensive as Albert Hoare serves to the “Dread” but the “Dread” misses an empty net. At the end Jube goes to the long distance missile, Reneau mishandles but clears nonetheless. Just before the half expires Jube gets its best shot at the equalizer but #5 squanders the opportunity and at the half it’s a 1-zip Yabra lead.

It’s some five minutes after intermission when Gilbert “The Brown” Bommer zeroes in on this ball and slices it over the keeper’s head for a 2-zip Yabra lead. Jube looks for offense off the dead ball but it’s Stephen Reneau who winds up with the pill. Meanwhile Yabra should go up 3-zip here but somehow the ball just can’t reach the net. But when the whistle does arrive it brings Yabra the 2-zip big “W” as both Yabra and Juventud Benquena move on to the semi-finals of the B.F.L. Tournament.

Juventus of Orange Walk also moved on over the weekend handing Sagitun Football Club a 3-1 win out at Mango Creek. That happened Saturday night. And yes, Real Verdes eliminated San Pedro Dolphins yesterday with a 3-zip score yesterday at the Norman Broaster Stadium inside San Ignacio. So now you have the four teams moving on: Yabra Sporting Club, Juventus, Jube and of course Real Verdes.

Turning to the softball scene lets go to Roger’s Stadium for the feature match between Acros and defending champion in yesterday’s schedule. It’s the bottom of the second in a one run game when Jenny Vernon singles off Keisha Reyes to make it a 2-zip lead for C.T.C. At the top of the fifth, Acros makes a break against Hortense Thurton on two consecutive fielding errors to put up their first run. In the sixth Acros ties the ball game on this hit which scores the runner from second base. On the bottom of this inning Acros tries to cut down Sara Jones stealing third but someone throws the ball away and Jones gives C.T.C. a precarious 3-2 lead. However, in the top of the seventh, terrible defense by third baseman Jones gives Acros two runs. Acros would win 7-3. Keisha Reyes wins Hortense Thurton loses.

In closing folks its only eleven days away from opening night in the Fourteenth CARICOM Basketball Championships at the City Centre. We should begin featuring these invited players from inside America playing for the Belize National Team here on Sports Monday as soon as possible.

That’s it. Thanks to the great work of all our cameramen this weekend. I’m James Adderley. Jah over all.
