Woman bicyclist killed by motorcycle
Belize’s streets and highways were once again the scene of death and destruction over the weekend as two were killed and several injured in road accidents. On Sunday night a collision between a motorcycle and a bicycle at the Cinderella Plaza junction claimed the life of a thirty year old woman. According to police at around eight fifteen twenty year old tourism police officer Ryan Genus was headed west on Freetown Road, when upon reaching the traffic light he crashed into thirty year old Cindy Cabral who was riding her bicycle north across the street into Cinderella Plaza. When News Five visited the scene this morning, the traffic lights were not working, but several drivers who were at the taxi stand when the incident happened said that the lights were working on Sunday night and that Cabral had the green light, which means that all other traffic should have yielded to her. Motorists routinely ignore the traffic lights, both at Cinderella Plaza and North Front Street, and many drivers who frequent the area feel that if the traffic laws are not going to be enforced and the lights aren’t being maintained, it might be safer to go back to the old system of stop signs.
