Opposition Leader Weighs In On U.D.P. Convention Season

Moses “Shyne” Barrow

Convention season is in full swing within the United Democratic Party. We have reported extensively on the convention in the City of Belmopan, where John Saldivar emerged victorious. Over the past weekend, several U.D.P. endorsement conventions were held in the Cayo District. Mark “OB” O’Brien was endorsed as the Standard Bearer for Cayo Central. Former Area Representative for Cayo North, Omar Figueroa, was also endorsed as the U.D.P. Standard Bearer for that constituency. The U.D.P. convention is expected to run into late June this year. And this morning, Moses ‘Shyne’ Barrow, the Leader of the U.D.P., was a guest on Open Your Eyes. One of the questions posed was about the quality of candidates he wants to see endorsed and winning conventions. Here is what he told our hosts.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition

“I want who the people want. I will be honest with you. I will give you an example in a young man Mr. Andrew Bradley. Andrew Bradley did not complete school but Michael Finnegan, one of the most successful politicians ever has no formal education. So, when Mr. Bradley applied there were some that wanted to deny his application because of lack of education. I refused because that is not what our democracy says. Our democracy says that representation of the People’s Act. So, it is for the people to decide whether his educational background will play a difference. I hear those that may say in Caribbean Shores they will never go for someone who is uneducated. That is for the people of Caribbean shores to determine. When I speak to Mr. Bradley his zest, confidence, and determination and reports on how he connects with everyone, he is a son of Caribbean Shores, born in Caribbean Shores, grow in Caribbean Shores, worked with Mr. Lee Mark as a campaigner. To me that is a success story. To me that is the evolution. Let the people decide. So, what I am saying, I don’t believe you need a PHD, to be a medical doctor, I don’t believe you need to be a business person. I believe you need to have the interest of those in your constituency at heart. I believe you need to have that dedication and commitment to change Belize for the better, starting with your constituency. That is the prerequisite for me. The rest is up for the people to decide, because I want what the people. Just as in Belmopan, once the people decided what they want, well that is what I want.”
