Commitment to Resolve Belize’s Public Transport Issues By 2024

In our story on Tuesday night, we showed the daily challenges commuters using public transportation face. The report covered several issues that need addressing, from overcrowding to uncomfortable seating and deteriorating structural conditions. And as many of our social media followers pointed out – that wasn’t even the peak hour or the worse it could get. So today, reporters asked the Minister of Transport for his take on the report and what will be done to address these issues.

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport

“There are many issues that needs to be resolved. And, you guys come and ask about the Belize City Bus Terminal and nobody come and ask about the progress of the Belize City Bus Terminal, because work is being done. As media unu have to be very fair. Unu come with a one sided story and unu have to come and get a response. In terms of the upgrade and overcrowding of buses, I hope that by the end of 2024 when everybody meet the standard, because I have said that by the end of 24 all those old buses must get off the highway, then we will introduce a ticketing system that will allow us to monitor the buses as they travel on the highway. We will know when they stop, when they pick up somebody and when they drop off somebody. So, it is just a matter of time. Unu give me five years, after five years unu do unu assessment.”
