Fugitive captured in Cotton Tree
It was left off the Commissioner’s initial running order for this morning’s press conference. And the news that the long arm of the law had finally caught up with fugitive Douglas Williams — itself a headline story — was almost lost in the barrage of information the police were throwing at the media.
Ornel Brooks, Commissioner of Police
“This morning we did an operation at an abandoned house in Cotton Tree Village. There he was arrested by members of our dragon unit and our special branch – special orbit intelligence gathering unit. And he’s now in custody in Belmopan and he will be taken back to her majesty’s prison shortly.”
Williams escaped from the Hattieville Prison in May of 1997 and led police, along with the infamous, now deceased, fugitive Wensworth Mangar, on a manhunt through the hills and jungles of the Cayo and Stann Creek districts. Williams will no doubt have an additional charge of escape tacked onto his current prison sentence.
