Rear Door for Silva’s Bus Flies Off on the Boulevard

This weekend, passengers onboard an outbound Silva’s bus were taken aback when the rear door of the bus flew off.  It happened in Belize City on Central American Boulevard and couldn’t have taken place at a most inopportune time, during the bus operators’ dispute with the Ministry of Transport.

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport

“It’s obvious to all Belizeans, while we don‘t want to accept it, that the buses on our highways are inadequate, some of them are outdated.  Some of them are maybe forty years old and you‘re talking iron against iron.  It will not hold and that‘s where I am saying then that after ten years, a premier should be changed and after twenty years an economy should be changed, after twenty-five years buses should be changed.  So when your bus reaches that amount of years, it has to come off the highway.  We are going to take it to the National Assembly for passage and it becomes legislated and it becomes law.  Over the weekend, a Silva‘s bus was traveling on the highway and the backdoor literally flew off the bus.  You might say that it could happen to any bus, but because of the age and the deterioration of the buses then these things do occur.  So I hope that the general public is seeing what is happening and while we are putting the pressure, it is for their own safety.”
