Story Picture
While investigators are still trying to piece together the evidence in Saturday morning’s burglary, the police have issued a nationwide advisory for the public to be on the lookout for the stolen guns and ammunition. The Head of the National Crimes Investigations Branch, Superintendent Gerald Westby, part of a special team that is probing the incident, says the police are confident that they will crack the case.

“This is a substantial amount of fire arms and ammunition and it could be anyone’s guess where it would show up and we would not want to speculate at this time. But we are working; the police force has launched a national investigation. We have all of our resources working nationally and we have set up a special investigative team that is working around the clock to expeditiously solve this particular case and hopefully get these firearms off the street.

Brodies has been very cooperative with us and they have been kind enough to provide us with some similar firearms for display and these are the types of firearms. And we would like to remind the public that these are just merely similar firearms and we have not recovered any firearms but we are just displaying these firearms so that the public can have an idea as to the types of firearms that were stolen.

Generally even the company is, I may say, is theorizing that they may have had inside collusion as well. And the company I must emphasize have been extremely cooperative and we’re working hand in hand with the company.”

Q: “Does the police anticipate an outbreak in gun related incidence with this kind of robbery?”

Superintendent Gerald Westby

“Certainly on the operational side we have take more other proactive measures in having the Q.R.T. in Belize that has been quite visible. Even the districts we have put in proactive, operational mechanisms to ensure that we do not have increase in gun related incidents.”

The police say gun dealers in particular need to be on the lookout for the stolen arms and ammunition. Latest figures indicate that about two hundred twelve and sixteen gauge shotgun cartridges were stolen, along with two thousand rounds of nine millimeter ammunition. In related news, the watchman who was on duty the morning of the incident told police that he was assaulted by at least three men.
