Pen Cayetano returns for music competition
He’s not here for turtle shells or pretty scenery. German based Belizean artist Pen Cayetano has come home not to play or paint, but to present a musical award named in his honor. According to the multi-talented artist, it is time for young Belizean performers to be recognized and he is more than proud that he can play a role.
Pen Cayetano, Artist
“I’m alive. I feel unexpressable. I feel so good; it’s the best thing I can say that someone appreciates me.”
Q: “What does this mean for up and coming musicians?”
Pen Cayetano
“Could have happened before. It gives Belizean people their own culture and it is better for them in the future.”
Mose Hyde, Organizer
“It is a song competition as well as celebration of the two hundred and twenty fifth anniversary of slave rebellion, so it is killing two birds with one stone.
We are going to have participation from Pen. We are going to honor him and give him his accolades. It is going to be a night of Belizean creativity and culture.”
There are fourteen artists competing in the musical competition tonight at Memorial Park. They will be graded on the lyrical content, vocal arrangement, concept originality, delivery and mass appeal of their compositions. The winner receives the Pen Cayetano Award and one thousand dollars donated by Amandala. The contest starts at seven.
