C.E.T. open house showcases student progress

Two well known educational institutions opened their doors to the public today and News Five’s Arreini Palacio, herself on summer break from U.W.I., went back to school. Her first stop was at C.E.T. on St. Thomas Street.

Five months of skills training was brought to the public today in the seventh annual Center for Employment Training Open House. Over one hundred and eighty students from seven different courses showed off their innovations, creations and recreations. This open day was, however, a little different than the past six.

“This year’s open house has been pushed to a new level in that we have made changes to the curriculum, in the sense that we have more involved the business sector. We have stepped up our standard and more displays and more preparation than the trainees last year.”

This year’s trainees were more than eager to share what they had learnt.

“First of all a welder must be very clean for example to put a piece of metal together these two metals should be very clean. This is an electrode. This is the ground and earth so you put it together and it will be powered by the welding equipment.”

Victor McSweeny, Mechanics Student

“What we did is we got an engine from a Bajaj and we came up with the bo-craft, actually Mr. Bowman’s vehicle. And what we tried to do was cover the systems we were taught, the fuel system, the breaking system and ignition system and we tried to display it this morning.”

For an aspiring restaurant owner the past term has taught him several things that may advance his future plans.

“Well the most interesting thing is how to set all different types of serving on a table because that is something I did not know anything about.”

“At C.E.T. we try to make these technological development readily available for our trainees because when they leave C.E.T. they will enter into a world of work when they will have to work with these technologies. So they are very much prepared. As the theme says, we are preparing for the technological development we perceive in the twenty first century.”
