Former Cop Sentenced to Three Years for Drug Trafficking
Former Police Constable Dion Bellini has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of drug trafficking. The conviction comes a little over two years following a bust near the outskirts of Orange Walk Town. Sometime around midday on December twenty-fourth, 2020, Bellini, a resident of a San Martin address in Belmopan, was approached by fellow officers who informed him that a search would have been conducted on a vehicle he was in charge of. Inside the white Jeep Cherokee, police observed two suitcases in the trunk of the vehicle. Upon opening the suitcases they discovered thirty-three parcels of cannabis, weighing eighteen point two kilograms. Bellini, whose case was originally before the Orange Walk Magistrate Court was transferred to Belize City late last year where it continued before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser. During mitigation, Bellini requested a fine instead of jail time, and went as far as begging the court to double the fine so as to avoid incarceration.
