Police Intercept Thief in School Burglary
Since the beginning of this year, there have been several reports of schools being targeted by thieves. Last week, two schools were burglarized, in Corozal and Belize City, and then on Sunday night, a police patrol ended up detaining a thief who was in the process of breaking into a school. Residents have said that police do not show up when they make the distress calls. ASP Fitzroy Yearwood says that they are investigating.

“It is very sad as a society that the very institution that are there to help our children gain their education are being vandalised by members of our society. It is very nerve-racking when these people are claiming to call for police assistance and they are saying that they don’t really get it on time. So last week, I promised to investigate the allegations that they made calls in relation to the Grace Primary School in Belize City on Fabers Road. We have a recording system that the command center in Belize City do have a man that is managing it and he told me that as soon as his investigation is complete, he will be able to give me full details, if and when any call was made. I know that the one in Corozal, the police officers were not in the immediate vicinity, but not too far either and their response may have saved that school from total vandalism. It is very sad that these schools are in our neighbourhoods and we have residents close by and for neighbours to just leave it as that and not call for the police, it is very sad.”
