Toledo man remanded for abusing toddler

And in news on domestic abuse, a carpenter of the Toledo District has been remanded into custody after he failed to meet bail for physically abusing his two year old stepson and common-law wife. Twenty-six year old Pedro Chen reportedly violently pushed the toddler who hit his head on a piece of wood, injuring his nose and mouth. The incident occurred around eight o’clock on Wednesday night when the child’s mother, twenty-three year old Rosa Castro, left him in Chen’s care at her Victoria Street house to go to the store. But when Castro returned home about ten minutes later, she was surprised to see the infant on the ground crying and Chen yelling at him. When the little boy stood up Chen reportedly pushed him to the ground and when Castro rushed to her child’s aid, Chen kicked her and struck the child down a second time, causing the injuries. Police say Chen, who was under the influence of alcohol, was upset that the child was not his and wanted Castro to give the toddler to his biological father. Chen is charged with Wounding and Common Assault and will be in custody until he meets bail of two thousand dollars, offered by Magistrate Roberto Ordonez. Meanwhile, his next court date is March nineteenth.
