Primary School Teacher Launches Great Escape Book

Remember “Lucky Dip”, “The Kite”, “On the Beach”, “I Wish”, and “Animals, Birds and Fish” from the Ladybird Sunstart collection? These are books used within our primary school system to engage our kids in comprehension – reading and learning. Well, Saint Mary’s Standard One Teacher Gianni Martinez today launched the Great Escape, a book that is child friendly and would expose young readers to manatees in Belize and for them to learn about the nurturing. It’s a follow up to a previous publication by Martinez, “Herbert the Hicatee.”

“This delightful story was something I wanted to do for a while. Just like the one I did before with Herbert the Hicatee, the manatee was something that I planned to do because like I said before, I really want children to be able to learn about protecting these animals as it is about their future. These animals have been vulnerable, different species of Belize are vulnerable and endangered and like I said before, the goal is to have students or children be able to learn about conservation about preservation and protection of these animals so that we could see these animals in the future living a full life. As well as have our students educated. I want that students be lifelong learners and lifelong readers – that’s the goal.”

“The pictures and artwork that we’re seeing in there, you did it? You had help?”

Gianni Martinez

“It was digitalised by an artist called Alex Stacy. He is not here today; he is from Ohio. He actually worked along with Cindy and Richard, but if you’d like to say the drawings were created by me and enhanced by Alex. I want to do more. I actually have the plan to do a third book or I should say a third series of this book because I want to be able to take the two animals and bring them together so that Herbert and Serena meet. And they both live in similar waters so at this point is to build a friendship between these animals and see a way forward for them.”

The book can be bought at the Image Factory or you can reach out to Martinez at 632-0256 to purchase a copy of the book.
