Belize City Resident Seeks Compensation For Damages Property in Demolished Home Controversy

Last night, we told you about the controversy surrounding the demolition of a house on Pike Crescent in Belize City. As we reported, Caroline Young, who had reportedly been occupying the house since 2019, arrived at the residence on Wednesday afternoon to a demolition crew leveling the property. To make matters worse, Jones’ personal belongings were still inside the home. The demolition was the end result of a letter that Jones received from attorney Bryan A. Neal on behalf of Jaime Perdomo. The letter stated that Perdomo is the rightful owner of the property and that Jones had been illegally occupying it. That letter went on to say that Jones and others have refused to vacate the property, despite several demands to do so and that they were being given thirty days to move. Well, Jones is now seeking compensation for all her household furniture and supplies that were damaged during Wednesday’s demolition process.  Jones has obtained the legal services of Balderamos Arthurs L.L.P. Today, the law firm wrote to Jaime Perdomo informing him that their client has invested, quote, “over then thousand dollars in renovating the house to make it habitable”, unquote. According to the letter, Jones also, “expended over three thousand dollars in filling the land and countless hours in landscaping and improving the same”. As Jones informed us on Wednesday, she made these investments after entering a verbal agreement with the previous owner. That agreement, according to Jones’ attorney, stated that she would be able to live out the investment and thereafter pay rent at two hundred and fifty dollars per month. Jones’ attorney argues that she had every right to remain on the property until she had recovered her investment or some alternative arrangement was made to compensate her. The law firm also noted that the possession of a property can only be recovered by way of an application in the Belize High Court. Jones is currently assessing her losses.
