New currency notes coming June 1st

Story Picture
In the beginning of May, the Central Bank of Belize launched an educational campaign on the revised issue of our one hundred, fifty, twenty and ten dollar currency notes. According to Marilyn Gardiner, the Manager of the Banking and Currency Department, while the new bills will retain their basic design, they will be smaller in size and contain some new features.

“The Central Bank of Belize wants to be proactive. We are committed in the continued enhancement of the security of the Central Bank of Belize notes. We have tried to make them harder to reproduce and also because the features will be more easier to recognize, they should assist the public in identifying a counterfeit note.”

These security features, the obvious features that is, that will assist any member of the public will be the watermark and the security thread. Anybody can hold the note up to the light and identify a counterfeit note especially one that has been produced by the photocopier and a scanner because the watermark and the security thread cannot be produced by this process.”

The campaign continues later this month when the bank’s printer, Delarue and Company, will be meeting with special target groups like the commercial banks and major retail stores to familiarize them with the upgraded bills. Meanwhile the bank advises the general public that after the new notes are introduced on June first, the old ones will continue to circulate until further notice.
