Wesley College holds science fair

Earlier this week the Belize Electric Company Limited launched its Secondary Schools Science Competition. And today one Belize City high school showed off what may very well be some of the entries in the national contest.

First, second and third form students of Wesley College spent the day touring various exhibits in the school’s science fair. According to Christopher Crossman, the head of the Math Department, the event is not only used as a marketing tool to attract potential students, but is used as a public relations tool.

“We are trying to let people understand that we believe in active learning, not only that we are trying to expose what we do at Wesley College to other schools, students who might be interested in coming to Wesley College. We know that there are people outside there who sometimes have a shaky impression of the whole educational system and we want them to understand that the educational system does not only involve coming to school and learning. As students, we try to make them as rounded as possible. So as you go around the campus today, you’ll see that there are activities that the students are indulging in which indicates that it’s not only academic inclination that we stress.”

While the students will not be graded on their projects, Crossman said they will be graded on how best they can explain their exhibits. One project that attracted a lot of attention was the explosion demonstration.

Crossman says that because the quality of the projects is high, the college is seriously thinking about entering some of them in the recently launched BECOL Science Competition.
