Come Out to the World Met Day at the Civic Center

World Meteorological Day is being celebrated on Thursday, March twenty-third and the National Met Service is organizing an open day at the parking lot of the Belize City Civic Center. It is being held under the theme “The Future of Weather, Water and Climate across Generations” and highlights the technological advances in meteorology over the years. Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon tells News Five why the public should come out.

“We are inviting the general public to come out and view the work that we do. We will be showcasing the different instruments that are used in weather forecasting, in monitoring the weather and how these instruments are used to do that type of work. Also it is an opportunity for students to look at the different careers that are available in this field.”

“So it is for everybody?”

“It’s for the general public. Everybody can come out. We’ll be having other organizations in attendance that also work with us. For example we have nemo, which works closely with us, the Hydrological Service, OIRSA, just to name a few, that will be there for us.”

“There is also a competition that is taking place at this time. Can you talk to us about it?”

“Yes, we are having a competition for primary and secondary school students. So it’s two different set of competition one for primary in which we are asking them to do a poster that highlights the theme for this year and the other one is for high school students for them to do a mini weather instrument that we use here at the Met Service and there will be prizes; first, second and third prize.”

The fair starts at nine a.m. and ends at three p.m.
