95 year old wins “Miss Y”
Ninety five year old Viola Myles proved Friday night, that you are never too old to achieve the best in life. Myles, who was the most senior contestant in this year’s Miss Y contest, won the coveted title before a packed audience at the Belize City Centre. Myles, who suffers from cataracts in both eyes, says she is just overwhelmed about her win. Today we caught up with her at her home for a little chit chat.
Viola Myles, Miss Y 1998
“Oh the pageant was lovely. It was fine, fine, fine. It’s a long time that I have been anything.”
Q: “I was made to understand that when your name was announced, you weren’t even aware that you had won?”
Viola Myles
“I didn’t aware, in truth, I wasn’t aware. It’s the next contestant beside me, Ms. Olive Flowers, she was the one that say da you, da you.”
Q: “What went through your mind then?”
Viola Myles
“I couldn’t tell you what went through my mind then. All I did was smile and went forward.”
Q: “You said, if I can remember correctly when we first spoke with you, that you went into the pageant for just the fun of it?”
Viola Myles
“Just the fun of it. Believe you me, when we were talking in the guest room, where we were dressing, I said prize or no prize. And if anybody want to laugh at me, it’s alright, because I laugh at plenty people already and plenty laugh at me, ’cause I have been on the stage all these years. From when I was a child they put me on to recite.”
Myles won herself a round trip ticket for two, courtesy of Taca Airlines, five hundred dollars cash, a gold chain and many other prizes.
