Minister of Transport Assures Commuters That New Buses Is a Must By December 2024
Public transportation buses will have to upgrade their fleets by December of 2024, according to the Minister of Transport, Rodwell Ferguson. But along with that requirement, there will be a system that will be followed for the grades of buses that will be allowed on the road, as the minister outlined. Ferguson assured commuters that new and better buses must be introduced and that by the end of this year there will be electric buses in Belize City.
Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport
“I want to tell the Belizean people that because I want to improve a standard I will be accused of so many things but I know I have a clear conscience between myself and my God. All that I want to see is the bus industry improve and transform along as the prime minister allow me to be the minister of transportation improvement will come. It is a difficult task because people believe in business as usual and nobody wants change we are subject to change. As a minister in this country I call out for change, so we have a commitment that by December of 2024, all those old buses on the road now will have to be parked and we have a system that cannot approve anything under ten years will keep service. Anything under twenty years will be for regular rounds but it must have a certain standard that you can see and their conditions, and anything twenty five years and over must be done. So the bus will go from one standard to the next because you want to show commuters and you want to provide the best transportation for them. I’ve experienced many deficiencies in the transportation industry while those for buses are flying off, and then you can see the ground through the buses. That has to stop. I think you all understand that hopefully by the end of the year there will be a pilot project not only in Belize City, but likewise in the western corridor where we’ll get some pilot buses to run for one year to understand how to operate these electric buses.”
