U.C.B. hosts Central American campus reps
Over the next two days, heads of student bodies from Central American Universities will be discussing ways on how they can improve their colleagues’ lives on campus. The conference, which is being hosted by the University College of Belize, is held annually under CUSCA, the superior advisory body for Central American universities. Ian Carrillo is the secretary of U.C.B’s student body.
Ian Carrillo, Secretary, U.C.B. Student Affairs
“The objectives of this meeting are to discuss student life and student affairs. Among some of the objectives that we have, are a student credit card that we would like to get implemented into universities for the sake of having students moving from university to university and from country to country without the use of visas, and for them to get discounts and benefits from international businesses. Other things include a student judiciary body for the rights of students. Up to now we have not had such a body and we feel that it’s time for us to, for students to have some kind of body to protect their rights.”
Q: “How has U.C.B. benefited from participating in these conferences?”
Ian Carrillo
“I think the main benefit has been the removal of a fear of Central American – of our Central American counterparts. We as Belizeans have tend to have a little phobia when it comes to Central American people because of the language barrier and I think this serves as a great opportunity for the students here at U.C.B. and the authorities of this university to realize that we can work with the Central Americans and we can work with the Caribbean as well. Together we can make something good out of it.”
Presently there are seven hundred students enrolled at the University College of Belize. Visiting delegates to the conference came from Panama, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras.
