Former F.I.U. Director Suing G.O.B. for Non-renewal of Contract

Christopher Coye

Former Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit, Kent Clare is suing the Government of Belize after he was removed back in late February. He was named director back in 2016 and his contract was not renewed. Clare’s deputy, Leni Ysaguirre McGann is now Acting Director of the F.I.U.  It was reported elsewhere in the media that the Caribbean Financial Task Force Mutual Evaluation Anti-Money Laundering Peer Review is to take place later this year and there was a need for change. But as it appears, Clare is not going out quietly and has filed for judicial review for the nonrenewal of his contract. Here’s what Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance Christopher Coye had to say.

Christopher Coye, Minister of State, Finance

“I am not sure of what basis should be covered. I understand that a claim has been lodged for judicial review and that is now a matter before the court and I think that has to be dealt with accordingly through attorneys.”

“He was notified that his contract would not have been renewed even though he was kept on.”

“As I said, that’s a matter that is before the court. I am sure you will be able to see the responses, replies, affidavits and those will all be of public record so you could get your answers to that in those documents.”
