A Fundraiser for a Track & Field Facility in the South

Ebu James Cordice

The free concert goes south on Thursday and students from schools in that part of the country will converge at Ecumenical High School for the presentation. On Saturday, April first, there will be the Minister’s Ball, hosted by Minister of Youth and Sports Rodwell Ferguson and the Yurumein Project. Funds generated will be used for the construction of a track and field facility in Dangriga.

Ebu James Cordice, Director, Yurumein Project

“We are using music, we are using sports because out of Ecumenical High School, when Doctor Cayetano was principal there, we started a journey of taking children to run in the Pen Relays in the United States and that way we are using sports as an academic vehicle and an economic vehicle as well. So with sports and music and our collaboration with the Melisizwe Brothers with Team SVJ International which is an organization I preside over, we sponsor the US leg of the student from Belize that comes to the US to run in the past two voyages there. And we continue to do that. Doctor Cayetano now presides over the Yurumein Project and we have embarked on the journey of creating a running track in the south so that more young persons can be exposed to sports.”

“We are in support of the Yurumein Project along with the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of Education, UNDP as well as Minister Rodwell Ferguson to build a track and field facility in the south of Belize, in Stann Creek District. It’s all a part of you know, the youths here have a gift and that gift is to use it and to develop it and we hope that this project helps out the youths in terms of building proper physique in terms of technique and everything. And the gold mine is all about supporting the youth’s dreams.”

“The Melisizwe Brothers came in from Canada; their parents are from Saint Vincent and they’re coming in just for this purpose to raise funds so that we can start with the foundation of the track and field facility in Dangriga. Our goal is to have it completed or at least half way completed by next year. We would love to have all funds by the end of this year, but as much as any assistance we can get with doing this project, it helps us complete a next phase. Filling the land, getting the materials in – it is really big initiative.”
