Commerce Bight to be Converted to Passenger Port & Marina
The port at Commerce Bight in Stann Creek District has been deserted for quite a number of years, but the Briceño administration is now looking at ways in which economic activity can be revived in that part of the country. Earlier this week, Cabinet discussed the development of a passenger port and marina at the location and has established a ministerial subcommittee led by Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations and Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Governance. Together, they will study the feasibility of developing a passenger port and marina at Commerce Bight. On Monday, during an appearance on Open Your Eyes, Prime Minister John Briceño spoke briefly on the issue.
Prime Minister John Briceño
“As it is right now, we have the Commerce Bight Port that has been abandoned down in Dangriga and so what the area representative has been doing and with lots of consultations for the past year and a half. They are trying to see how they can now convert that into a cruise port, but for smaller ships. Remember, what drives tourism da noh di cruise tourism, you know, it is the overnight stay. So we have to be very careful, we have to find that balance.”
