Customs officer charged for evading duty
An internal investigation by the Customs Department has resulted in the arrest of one of their junior officers. According to reports reaching News Five, twenty nine year old Customs Examiner Michael Dyer was charged on April ninth with knowingly dealing with uncustomed goods. The items, which have a market value of over three hundred thousand dollars, included an assortment of liquors, beer and other goods. Sources say sometime between September 1997 and March of this year customs officials became alerted after the items, which were imported by a major business house for re-export, ended up on the local market. While no charges have been brought against any civilians or other customs officers who are suspected to be involved, Dyer was taken into Magistrate’s Court, charged and offered bail in the amount of two hundred thousand dollars which he could not meet. He was subsequently taken to Hattieville Prison. Dyer was expected to be released late this evening, however, after family members managed to come forward with the necessary financial documents for his release.
