Refurbishment of Belize City Terminal Almost Done
As part of the reform, the Transport Department has also been putting in infrastructural upgrades. The bus terminal on West Collet Canal has been undergoing refurbishing for over a month. Vasquez says the inconvenience will last a little longer and that at the end of the day, it will serve everyone better. She also hopes that passengers would also do their part and report situations where bus operators or their buses fall short of meeting the standards.
Dian Vasquez, Chief Transport Officer
“We’ve gotten a lot of feedback about the terminal infrastructure. I mean, in Belize City, we are currently working to upgrade that infrastructure to accommodate the buses. I know it’s causing a bit of inconvenience at the moment, but we’re almost finished with the refurbishment of the terminal. So we hope that by upgrading these facilities, you know, we’re also doing our part in ensuring that we can properly hold these operators accountable when they enter our facilities. It’s an entire system and we have to be looking at it from different levels and we can’t be doing or taking piecemeal approach. I mean, transportation reform and upgrading, it’s not only about the bus operators getting nicer buses, but it’s also about us putting in that infrastructure that is needed in terms of the schedule, the routes, and even looking at an educational component for commuters. You know, looking at changing their mindset and having them help us hold these operators accountable.”
