Chief Met Officer Says Wildfires are to Expected in April

The dry season has brought with it several wildfires that have been reported in western Belize District.  We have reported of fires that have been burning in the vicinity of Gracie Rock, near mile twenty on the George Price Highway, as well as other infernos that have been recorded in the vicinity of the Belize Zoo.  According to Chief Met Officer Ronald Gordon, notwithstanding a fire risk forecast, these events are to be expected at this time of year.

Ronald Gordon, Chief Meteorological Officer

“We do a fire risk forecast during the dry season and we provide the decision makers, especially the forest department, in terms of the risk of forest fires, and we expect these conditions during the dry season to sort of enhance the forest fires and that’s what we are seeing.  It’s typical for this time of the year.”

“So people need to just what, keep the areas around their place clean and wet and whatever.”

Ronald Gordon

“Well it’s not really my area of expertise to provide that advice, but certainly those are common sense measures that people can take to avoid it.”
