Women In Renewable Energy Network Establishes Belize Chapter
The Women in Renewable Energy (W.I.R.E.) Network today launched a chapter in Belize. WIRE was founded six years ago through the Clinton Foundation in the U.S. The WIRE network is a community that focuses on the increase in gender equality across the energy sector. In 2022, the WIRE Network joined the Rocky Mountain Institute (R.M.I.), a non-profit organization that aims towards improving America’s energy practices. R.M.I. and the Ministry of Energy are now partnering to establish the WIRE Belize Chapter. In Belize, women represent approximately thirty-six percent of the energy sector’s workforce. An event was held this evening at the Biltmore where five women working in the sector were recognized for their achievements. We spoke with Ryan Cobb, the Energy Director at the Ministry of Energy.

“Today we are celebrating women in renewable energy by launching the Belize chapter of W.I.R.E. from the Rocky Mountain Institute. In the past we have had that we applications of two women per year to this organization, but now establishing a Belize chapter this allows us to remove that limiter. So, we can include many more women per year. This is primarily a mentorship and networking program where women who have gone through the program will be able to guide other women who are in the STEM fields, specifically within the renewable energy fields within the energy sector to come about on how to go about improving their careers, even starting to initiate other projects as well. Today we will be honoring five women. In Belize we had the luck of having two women in the past, one has gone into the regional sector and one that still remains with us.”
