Brace For Impact, Sahara Dust Concentrations Moving Across Atlantic
And, while a below average hurricane season may come as some good news; Belizeans are being advised to prepare for the passage of Sahara dust over our country. According to Gordon, plumes of Sahara dust are currently moving across the Atlantic Ocean. Those clouds are heading this way.
Ronald Gordon, Chief Meteorologist
“There are plumes of Sahara dust that’s coming across the Atlantic, and that’s another factor that typically suppresses tropical cyclone activity.”
Marion Ali
“Very good. But in terms of the dust itself, what can we expect on this side?”
Ronald Gordon
“Well, currently we do not have significant amount reaching to the Western Caribbean Sea. However, as the season evolves, we typically climb up around the summer months, we may expect, we – it’s potential that we may see the Sahara dust reaching our area and it typically causes hazy conditions and may affect people with asthmatic conditions and so forth.”
