UNESCO Working to Promote Cultural Expression in Belize
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, better known as UNESCO, actively fights against prejudice and discrimination, as well as the defense of human rights and the protection of cultural heritage. The latter is what the donation from the Government of Mexico through the Recovery of Historical Records in Latin America and the Caribbean Project seeks to achieve. During an interview with Dian Maheia, C.E.O. in the Ministry of Education Culture and History, she disclosed that there is an ongoing UNESCO initiative to promote the diversity of cultural expression in Belize.

“UNESCO and a team are working towards the Quadrennial Periodic Report for the Protection and Promotion of Diversity of Cultural Expression and they worked four days last week on preparing for this and this is something that is going to be ongoing now. And I think being here at our House of Culture, here where our Government House is, recognising that our culture is important to us, we have to do more – not just to acknowledge it, but to protect and preserve it. And here are our neighbours saying the same thing to us.”
