Sister: Fitzroy, the Problem Solver and Willing Helper
Fitzroy Yearwood had initially signed up with the Belize Defense Force, but didn’t like that job and left. He then joined the Belize Police Department in 1996 and even though his health had dealt him a few stiff blows, he rose through the ranks to Assistant Superintendent of Police, the post he held up until the time of his death. While the job demanded a lot of his time, he still managed to help people without talking about it, as his younger sister, Monique Yearwood shared.

“I cannot recall a time when Fitzroy didn’t have a solution for a problem. It could be anything, and I would take it to him and he would say like: “Is that what you are worried about? I can fix that.” Anything, it could be just something for emotional support. He always had a solution to whatever problem you think you have. And I believe that yes, he served in his job in that capacity, but he served anybody, he helped anybody. He was just always, always there for you. And that’s what I’ll remember the most about him. Since his passing, a lot of people have been reaching out to us and say: “I remember the time he did this for me, or did that for me.” And he never spoke about those things to us, even though these are people that we also know. And I tried to think when did he find the time to do that, because I feel like he was always with us. We got a lot of time with him at our parents house, so he gave of himself. He really served.”
Yearwood will be laid to rest on Friday, following a funeral service at Saint John’s Cathedral in Belize City, starting at one p.m., and will include full police honors.
