Red Cross Society gets donation
The Belize Red Cross Society is the beneficiary of some much needed medical supplies for its clinic in Belmopan. The donation was handed over earlier this week to the Director of the Society Audrey Courtenay, by a group of ladies who are originally from Guatemala that sees this small gesture as a way of repaying Belize for its hospitality to them.
Regina Lopez, Coordinator, Fund Raising Group
“Four months ago we started to discussed that we have a group and we started to do some fund raising. This is the second that we had last Friday and we decided to help the Belize people and we helped the Child Care Center that is in St. Thomas and this is our second donation to the Red Cross. We ask what institutions need our help and we try to do our best and help anybody that they need. When I say we, I say to all the Guatemalans that live here, they receive a lot from Belize. I think we have to return something to the people here.”
Audrey Courtenay, Director, Belize Red Cross
“We run a health care clinic in Belmopan, at the Belmopan branch and a day care center. And the cost of medication for that clinic very often presents quite a problem for the headquarters. So when these ladies visited us a few weeks ago asking how they could give assistance to the Red Cross, I asked them to direct their contribution to that clinic. There are antibiotics, there are medications for skin infections, ear infections, children’s illnesses, like coughs and fever, mainly that.”
The donation of medical supplies to the Red Cross Society is valued at a little over a thousand dollars. The group of ten women, some of whom are married to Belizeans, say they plan to go on fund raising and supporting local not-for-profit organizations.
