Prime Minister appoints Commission of Inquiry

In news from politics, the office of the Prime Minister has announced the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate alleged irregularities and improprieties in the Economic Citizenship Program during the term of office of the last People’s United Party government. The alleged wrong doings are included in the Auditor General’s report on the program during the P.U.P. administration of 1989 to 1993. A government press release outlines the scope of operation of the Commission saying that it is charged with investigating allegations of gross mismanagement which supposedly resulted in the loss of seven point five million dollars to the Government of Belize and to identify the person or persons responsible for the said loss, to determine whether the fees payable for Economic Citizenship were properly waived by the then Minister of Immigration and Nationality and to determine whether any criminal offenses were committed. According to the Belize Information Service, the Commission of Inquiry was appointed on the recommendation of the Public Accounts Committee after it had examined and considered the Auditor General’s report.
