Prime Minister Weighs In On Sale of Weed Gummies to Belize City Students
When we caught up with him today in Orange Walk, we also asked Prime Minister John Briceño about the incident involving the cannabis-infused gummies. According to the P.M., he became outraged when he first heard the news and ordered that an investigation be immediately launched into the matter. He later found out that the gummies originated from the Belize Police Department’s exhibit room and that the items were being shipped to a police officer on interdiction before being held by Customs. P.M. Briceño says the action of the exhibit keeper, if proven true, is inexcusable.

“I think it was horror. I mean, and I don’t think we could find the, the right adjectives to be able to describe, you know, when you found out that all of these little kids were given edibles that seem to be laced with marijuana. And, I don’t think there are words that can describe how you felt. And especially the parents when they saw how their children were behaving, being induced by some sort of drugs. And, it just shows that more of the society, we have to be very careful with everything that we do. And to ensure that these things should not happen. And, and we have to ensure that it never happens again to our children. What I did, I got the first information when it happened. I was immediately alerted about what’s happening on that. And again, both the minister on the commissioner of police said that they will leave no stone unturned to be able to find the perpetrators, those that are responsible for this. I can’t see how the people that were selling could say, well, they were not aware that this was not candy because I’m sure they have read what it was in when they pick it up. I’m sure it was in some sort of wrapping. And they could see that it was infused with drugs. And I find that unforgivable that they would do such a thing to go to a school. And to sell it. But now we’re finding out there are different layers. It’s like an onion as you go peeling. You’re starting to find more and more into it. It seems that it was sent to police and then the customs department stopped it, passed it on to the police. The police doing investigation and for some reason the person in charge of the exhibit decided to throw it away can comment on the person with the exhibit that threw it away. That person knows better there’s a procedure when you go to throw away confiscated /government property. There’s a process I think more investigation has to find out why is it that he threw away a bad smell, but that is not an excuse. And certainly, whosoever imported those edibles, it’s irrelevant if it is a police officer or not. That person has to be brought down to justice.”
