Newly Elected B.N.T.U. National President Withdraws Only Weeks after Election
The Belize National Teacher Unions has scheduled a council meeting for Wednesday to address the abrupt withdrawal of President-elect, Ruth Shoman. On Monday, Shoman served a letter to President Elena Smith informing her that she is pulling out as the newly-elected National President of the Belize National Teachers Union effective immediately. Shoman noted that since her victory, certain council members have been adamant in ensuring that they discredit her. She went on to say to President Smith, your apparent silence enabled it to escalate which has brought great pain and suffering to my family, especially children”. As a result, Shoman says she cannot “continue to be a part of an organization that has principles of fairness and justice, yet the manner in which I have been treated has been unfair and unjust”. Shoman also relinquished her post as B.N.T.U.’s representative on the People’s Constitution Commission. The Belize National Teachers Union is expected hold a press conference following their council meeting. We will continue to follow.
