Weeks After Fire, Mayan Garden Resort Remains Closed
A few weeks after a fire destroyed several thatch-roofed structures at the Mayan Garden Resort in Orange Walk, the business establishment remains closed to the public. The fire happened on the afternoon of Sunday April thirtieth and the damages amount to almost five million dollars. While the Fire Department had indicated soon after the incident that the quick spread of the blaze was due to the thatch roofing, the actual cause of the fire has not yet been released. News Five understands that the owner of the resort is currently out of the country and the repairs to the affected buildings have still not begun. On the day when the fire occurred, the persons in charge had gone to the airport and a strong wind was blowing, which resulted in the embers blowing onto and igniting other structures. The establishment is also six miles away from where the fire station is located, so by the time the fire trucks arrived at the location, the fire was already burning freely.
