N.T.U.C.B. Supports Unexplained Wealth Bill
On Friday, Prime Minister John Briceño introduced the Civil Asset Recovery and Unexplained Wealth Bill. The bill provides for the civil recovery of the proceeds of unlawful conduct. The introduction of the Bill signifies a significant step for the Government of Belize, empowering the Financial Intelligence Unit (F.I.U.) to reclaim ill-gotten assets and wealth obtained through criminal activities. Under this legislation, the F.I.U. will possess the ability to obtain an Unexplained Wealth Order whenever suspicions arise. The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (N.T.U.C.B.) has been clamouring for greater transparency and accountability. President Luis Luke Martinez says the bill has the N.T.U.C.B.’s full support.

“The National Trade Union Congress welcomes these legislations, right? Um, it forms a part of our campaign. We’ve been advocating and we’ve been campaigning for these type of good governance legislations for some years now. Uh, they’re under some international pressure, which aids our campaign. And so, um, we continue to encourage the government to… To, to, to enact these types of legislations that are good for governance.”
