Pickup crashes on Eyre Street
It was a close call for a number of parked cars on Eyre Street this afternoon but for one moving vehicle it was the end of the line. Reports are that a brown Ford Ranger pickup belonging to BIMCO and driven at the time by the company’s driver, was traveling at high speed down the street, when suddenly the driver’s door flung open. The man behind the wheel, according to eyewitnesses, lost control of the vehicle that was now heading directly for the parked cars on the left hand side of the street. To avoid the impending collision, the driver made one last desperate move and sharply turned the wheel to the right. This caused the pickup’s front wheel to drop in the drain and then bounced on top of the driveway in front of the office of PAHO. While the iron gate survived, the front end of the Ranger did not. The driver told us that he crashed because he was trying to avoid a pedestrian who walked in front of the pickup but witnesses contend that the young man was speeding and that it was lucky that there was no pedestrian on the street at the time of the accident.
