Horizon Academy Teaching Students How to Hone Entrepreneurial Skills

Earlier today, one hundred and thirty primary school students who attend Horizon Academy showed off their talents in a financial literacy program. The students took part in a Work Expo. Those skills and talents are what they developed in areas of entrepreneurship, math skills, and creativity. News Five’s Marion Ali stopped by the school and shares what she observed in this report.

The students of Horizon Academy displayed and sold the products that they spent the last six weeks creating in their Financial Literacy classes. The school’s principal, Elia Avilez, shared with us that there was quite an array of items and snacks that the children made.

“These products Include beverages like snow cones popsicles. Then we have The arts and crafts like they made. We have bags. We have magnets. We have jams as well in jars. We have, yes, we have decorations.”

Standard two student, Corrine Gomez and her standard four schoolmate, Madeline Elters, shared what they made for the expo today.

“My and we make popsicles, cupcakes and mini cakes. Financial literacy is relevant to me if, like, I were to go out and buy something. Like, I would need to know how, how much change I was supposed to get, how to save my money, and how to use it correctly for what I need and what for I don’t need. Yes. And what will be useful and what will not be useful.”

“And how to invest, right?”

Madeline Elters

“Yes.”

Marion Ali

“Like in sweet treats?”

Madeline Elters

“Yes.”

“We stitch and craft things, and these are two things we’ve made so far, and this is a key chain that I bought.”

Marion Ali

“Okay, explain what these are.”

Corrine Gomez

“This is a bookmark. We, we first painted it and then we decided to glue these, and then we made these little tassels for the bookmarks and we, like, designed them so this one looks like a pencil”

Marion Ali

“Oh, great. And this one?”

Corrine Gomez

“This is a wall organizer. Like, if you make a good painting, you could hang it up right here and boop.”

Avilez explained that the school teaches students entrepreneurial skills since, in the real world, those skills are as relevant as academic learning.

Elia Avilez

“Even though yes academics is important, that is not the only aspect of what makes up a person, you know, and our children will become adults. Unfortunately, they can’t stay babies forever.”
