Teachers’ Union assists Gutierrez’s family

In other news on the strike and the tragic death in the Sugar Industry, the Belize National Teachers’ Union today issued a release expressing regret at the shooting death of Antanacio Gutierrez while at the same time, it is offering some assistance to the family. According to the Union at its meeting on Saturday, its council of management acknowledged the industry’s importance to the economy. The Union blasts the quote “level of violence and over-reaction by some elements of the security forces that led to the regrettable and untimely death of Gutierrez.” And in extending their deepest condolences to Gutierrez’s family, the Union donated one thousand dollars to the trust established by the Cane Farmers Association. The BNTU also welcomed the recent compromise and called for diligence, responsible leadership and proper guidance in the industry.
