B.D.F. celebrates 20th birthday
On Saturday the Belize Defense Force celebrates its twentieth anniversary. Ceremonies to mark the occasion begin at eight in the morning, and include the passing out parade of recruit intake number thirty nine. The program will also feature the official handing over of command from General Earl Arthurs to Colonel Robert Garcia. The actual changeover took place six months ago and according to reports Colonel Garcia has acted swiftly to instill renewed discipline. Although there have been rumors of mass dismissals, the Ministry of Defense confirms that only six soldiers have been sent packing, for offenses ranging from absenteeism to stealing. All the dismissals were handled through the Public Service Commission and included corporals, lance corporals and privates. Following Saturday morning’s ceremonies in Ladyville there will be an all day fair open to the public.
