Acros beats Juventus at MCC grounds

Story Picture
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and welcome to this first serving of Sports Monday. The two top professional football clubs of the Jewel clashed for the lead in the standings of the BJL playoffs yesterday at the MCC Grounds and was it a monster. Yes it was defending champion Juventus of Orange Walk facing undefeated Acros of Belize City – but as we go to the picture lets pay our respects to Sir George Brown?s Brown Bombers who posted 2 big wins at the Friendship Cup at Peru South America last week ? and yes we have given you a glimpse into the future.

But its back to the present and here?s the opening kick off in the battle for supremacy and we?re into it.

Much to the city fans delight, its Acros on the attack in the early going and this could have been a good had not Clifford Usher been caught in the offside position.

Its more Acros when #10 gets an open shot ? but it serves only to embrace Charlie Slusher?s reputation at goal.

Juventus finally threaten off this corner kick, but Marcelino Tun simply can?t find the target.

Meanwhile this play finds David “Manu” McCauly in a one on one situation with Edmundo Funez, but we?ll have to call this match-up a draw since neither player got his way.

But hold on a minute, Marcelino goes right finds Esteban Hall the punch crashes into a empty goal as Juventus goes up 1-zip, twenty-nine minutes deep.

Folks immediately Juventus tries to bust this game wide open – a misplay by an Acros defense gets this ball to Marcelino Tun – but the left foot is straight at Edmundo Funez and at the half Juventus boasts a 1-nil lead.

So we go to 2nd half and its seven minutes into the action when Juventus gets caught napping. You believe they failed to present a good wall on this dangerous spot kick? Juan Hasso pokes the ball through a gaping hole and its a tied ball game just like that.

A few minutes later its Acros looking for the go-ahead goal when Roberto Alamilla fires – Charlie Slusher misplays – but no damage is done.

At the other end Marcelino Tun gets the opportunity to break the tie, but a pick two far gives possession to Edmundo Funez.

Meanwhile as the say folks ? expect the unexpected ? this rebound reaches Roberto Alamilla and a right away right foot slams into the net behind a beaten Charlie Slusher ? and yes Alamilla come up with the game win in the 2-1 big W for Acros.

Clifford Usher, Acros

“Well respect to the game ahm; we work hard during the week ah, it’s a pity the entire team can’t be together but when it come to supremacy for today we kinda comfortable to say that Acros had a an edge on Juventus. They played a very good game; we can’t take nothing from them but certainly they are the defending champs but fortunately today was our day.”

“What was the key ingredient in this Acros win today, Clifford?”

“I guess ahm, it’s ah, all about unity. The team ah, was slack in the first half we were quarreling with each other and we just couldn’t get ourselves together. Ahm, at the break, the coach spoke to us and tell us ah, the particulars of the game and what our job entail. So Ahm, fortunately we carried it out and pull off the victory.”

Freddie Tun, Juventus

“If it is a battle of supremacy today, do you think Acros displayed that particular ability?”

“Well em James em, first of all I think both teams did their best today, no. And em, they showed that they ahm, one of these teams ya will be the champions, no. Acros show that they have football, we show the same way, only that today probably they ahm, Acros had a little bit more of luck than we, no. And that is how they came up with this win over us.”

In other playoff games from over the weekend: San Pedro and Real Verdes battled to a scoreless stalemate while Jube kept Belmopan Bandits winless in a 3-2 finish.

I?m James Adderley, Jah over all!
