Soybean Soon to be Exported to Mexico

Jose Abelardo Mai

Also discussed during the meeting was the ongoing bilateral agricultural cooperation between Belize and Mexico focusing on soursop, pitahaya, dragon fruit and soybean. As it currently stands, Belize is producing a surplus of soybean and mechanisms are being prepared for the exportation of soybean and soybean meal to Mexico.

Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture

“Initially, Doctor Villalobos, the Secretary of Agriculture, had said that he wants Mexicans to partner with Belizeans to produce soybean and to export to Mexico. You would recall that there was the time tariff waiver for products. Well yesterday, they confirmed to us that the tariff is removed from soybean so we can export soybean to them. They’ve asked us for a list of requirements. We are working on that right now. They have asked us what they want us to submit; we are working on that right now. We have given our team four weeks to deliver that. In these things, you have to establish timeframes; you can’t leave it hanging there. It will never happen. So we are giving our technical people four weeks to provide all the material. And then Mexico will respond to us, based on what you submitted to us, we can or we cannot. We will do an assessment and then we move forward. So we have a timeframe for that. And so I think I came back with this sense of satisfaction that we did achieve a lot.”
