Mangar and Williams seen regularly in St. Margaret?s
On yesterday’s newscast we aired the chilling story of a young woman who was assaulted and nearly raped by a man believed to be Douglas Williams, an escaped prisoner and one of Belize’s most wanted criminals. Tonight News Five’s Patrick Jones returns to St. Margaret’s Village and discovers that Williams…and fellow fugitive Winty Mangar, appear to be regular visitors to the once quiet community.
Residents of St. Margaret Village are trying hard to get on with the task of living. But these days they’ve added one more chore to the daily routine – looking over their shoulders. While most agree that there’s been an increase in robberies in the village since the beginning of the year, they can’t quite put a finger on who the culprit or culprits are. An incident on the evening of January twelfth however, appears to have cleared up much of the mystery.

“We mi gone down da pecka, gone just listen to the news.”
Seventeen year old Ryan Young recalled that on that Monday evening, he and his father, were visiting with a friend; but shortly after arriving at their home, Mr. Jones’s vehicle was broken into.

“When I look the passenger door was opened. So when I reached there, and I never look ina the vehicle. I locked the vehicle back and I say I musey left it open but I never left it open. Then Mr. Jones tell me look ina the vehicle, so I look ina the vehicle. When I look the gun mi missing and his hunting gears.”
These include knives, flashlights and batteries. While Mr. Jones’ gun was returned to him less than twenty four hour later, the entire episode seems to suggest that at least one of the two fugitives, Douglas Williams is a frequent guest of Diana Diaz.

“Well at the time when Mr. Jones get here, well the bally mi deh ya, di do some work round and round wid we, we give him some dinner the afternoon, the evening he hung around till bout say six and couple after that … Williams … Jonesy arrived. At the time when he came Williams was in the pickup by the edge of the place to the back there and next thing my old man tell me Diana ker wa bun for him, so when I gone to the truck fi ker the bun for him he wasn’t there.”
According to Diaz’ account of what happened next, she and her husband met up with Williams the following day and convinced him to return the gun to its owner.

We went to the store, we gone look for some pig tail to cook. so me an Herman Hinks gone da the shop in the lee car. So while going we saw him standing, he had just come from the back. so when he come out, so you could see him from the main road, Mr. Hinks tell me,. Diana, da no him dat. I said I don?t know. So he reverse and da same way we gone up in the road and da him fu true, so he asked him about the gun and thing, he said he had it, but somebody told him that Mr. Jones da fu we friend and he always come here. Well da same way, Mr. Hinks told him boy, I want back the gun. he axed whey he did it and he should not have did it because we handle him alright when he comes around.”
Diaz says Hinks then dropped her off home and went back to meet with Williams at which time the gun was handed over. Diaz claims that since the incident four weeks ago, she hasn’t seen Williams; but that is not the story being told in the village. As most people we spoke with told us they believe both he and Mangar are being fed by Diaz.

Q: Do you think that, Mr. Williams is still in the village.

Well ya, you could say that he is in the village but you can’t tell where he is.

Q: You said that you are familiar with Mr. Williams. Do you know if he is traveling along with Mr. Mangar or are the two together.
Diana Diaz
Well I wouldn?t say the two are together, because he most of the time he always keep by himself.

Q: Do you think Mr. Mangar is in the village as well?
Diana Diaz
Well I wouldn?t say he’s in the village and I wouldn?t say not.
In his infamous New Year?s interview on Radio Krem, Winsworth Mangar dared the police to come and get him. It?s not like they don?t know where to look. Patrick Jones, for News Five.
Police have indicated that they are aware of the sightings of Mangar and Williams on the Hummingbird Highway and are pursuing a strategy that will hopefully result in their capture. They caution, however, that some of the reports to police are deliberately planted by friends of the fugitives to send authorities in the wrong direction. The sighting described in today’s news story took place on January 12th.
