Hazardous medical waste dumped in Lake I

In a story just in a News Five team has returned from Tibruce Street near Mahogany in the Lake Independence area. We were called out by nearby residents who saw a pickup dumping a load of garbage by the roadside. But this was no ordinary garbage. Amongst the trash was medcial waste including bloody gloves, medical gowns, used iv drips and bandages. Stationery found in the pile identified the load as belonging to Belize Medical Associates on St. Thomas Street. A call there refered us to the man who is contracted to haul the clinic’s garbage, a Mr. Juan Molina. Molina then told News Five that he has been having problems with his truck and hired one Vincent Francis to do the hauling. Francis told News Five that he didn’t dump any garbage on any roadside, but that at the request of certain Lake I residents, he dumped the garbage to fill their swampy lots. “Did the people know their yards were being filled with hazardous contaminated waste?”, we asked. “No”, he replied. “It doesn’t matter since it all goes into the swampwater anyway.” More on this tomorrow.
