U.S. One-China Policy Intact
But what about the United States’ One-China Policy which dates back decades? Has there been any recent change to that policy? The Deputy Assistant Secretary says there has been no change, but explains how the U.S. has been able to partner with Taiwan on regional projects.
Kerri Hannan, Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. State Department
“No changes to the policy, but the Biden Administration has been a supporter of Taiwan since Senator Biden voted on the Taiwan relations Act so many years ago. We continue to support Taiwan and work to make sure there is no cross-strait aggression.”
Duane Moody
“There has been lobbying efforts, even by Belize, for Taiwan to be included in these international fora. For some reason it has not materialized. Can you speak to us if there is any support from you guys or America’s stance on that – seeing Taiwan being accepted as a member into these international organizations?”
Kerri Hannan
“Yeah. Any organization that doesn’t require that the member be a state would welcome Taiwan. And we certainly want them to participate meaningfully in any international fora where they can. I know one way that they are able to partner with countries like Belize and others in the region, like Saint Lucia, is the GCTF, which is a framework that allows Taiwan to bring their expertise in various areas – women’s empowerment, economic development, agriculture and share that technical expertise with their partners. And the United States has participated in that framework before in various capacities. And there will be a meeting in Belize, I think, in the coming months.”
