U.S. Supportive of Belize’s Strong Ties with Taiwan

Kerri Hannan

Belize and Taiwan have enjoyed diplomatic ties for over three decades and, as a country, we’ve benefited tremendously from bilateral cooperation in areas such as agriculture, health, education and infrastructure development. During her visit, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. State Department Kerri Hannan met with Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Belize, Doctor Lily Li-Wen Hsu. Several Central American countries have severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favour of China and Belize is among the last two remaining allies. Hannan says that the U.S. is supportive of Belize’s strong ties with Taiwan.

Kerri Hannan, Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. State Department

“The United States is a supporter of the One-China Policy and also recognises the value that Taiwan brings to the Belizean people. They are a democratic nation with a lot of expertise, a strong and vibrant economy and have been here for the last three decades working with the Belizean people on projects of importance and partnering with you.”

“And so, how does that speak to the relationship that you guys have with Taiwan?”

Kerri Hannan

“The United States is a strong supporter of the Taiwan people. We are concerned about aggression by the PRC, cross-strait aggression. We think that there is the threat of economic or diplomatic or military pressure across the Taiwan strait is destabilizing and we are anxious to see continued dialogue as the path forward and not just aggression.”
