Dwayne Tillett Charged for Attempted Murder of Aaron Matura
Twenty-year-old Dwayne Tillett, charged with the attempted murder of Aaron Matura, appeared in court to face a charge of attempted murder today. Tillett appeared unrepresented this evening before Senior Magistrate Baja Shoman, where he was read a charge of attempted murder on the life of Aaron Matura that occurred on Sunday, July third, during a shooting incident on Rivero Street. In court, Magistrate Shoman explained to Tillett that since the charge is an indictable offense, she could not take a plea from him, nor grant him bail. She further explained that at a given date, a preliminary inquiry will be heard to establish whether or not there is sufficient evidence to have a trial. Tillett’s arrest arose out of a shooting that ended in the death of sixteen-year-old Jahfeth Stamp. Stamp was shot dead Sunday morning on Rivero Street in Belize City after he carried a gun and was about to open fire on a group of men where a house had recently burnt down. But he never got to carry out his plan because someone from the group who realized what was about to take place, shot Stamp. Stamp ran and tried to escape after being shot, but collapsed and died. Today, Police Commissioner, Chester Williams said the department has taken some measures since the incident to deter further criminal activity in the area.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“Police did arrest him and charge yesterday, the young man, Tillett. He was charged with attempted murder, I think, and perhaps he’s either wounded or grievous harm in respect to that incident. We are putting other mechanisms in place to be able to make the area much safer. The security company is in the area currently dealing with installation of cameras. The foot patrol we have in the area has been tasked to be more vigilant, and then, from Eastern Division as well as from Belmopan, we are currently doing operations in the area to make sure that we go after those persons who we believe are involved. The G.I-3 has been engaged to look at the issue of bringing down charges against those young persons who are hell-bent on creating havoc within that particular area.”
Dwayne Tillett was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until September sixth.
