Erwin Fitzgibbon is Deported and Sent to Jail
Thirty-three-year-old Erwin Fitzgibbon, a resident of Benbow Street, has been captured and returned to Belize after absconding to the United States in July of last year. The well-known street figure had been granted bail through the High Court after being charged with being a member of a gang. This evening, he appeared unrepresented before the lower court where he was read four offenses of contempt to judicial order. According to the police department, Fitzgibbons bail conditions in July 2022 included that he checked in at the police station five days a week, from Monday to Friday. He has since been accused of willfully neglecting to appear in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on July 9th, 2022. Likewise, he was accused of leaving the jurisdiction without the permission of the court. Fitzgibbon was also accused of contempt of judicial order when he was ordered by the High Court judge to surrender his travel documents to the clerk of court when he was granted bail and failed to do so. For these offenses, Magistrate Brown sentenced him to three months in prison for each count which will run concurrently. That sentence came into effect today and will expire on October eleventh, 2023.
