CitCo Cleans Drains and Canals as Part of Hurricane Preparedness
The Old Capital is said to rest upon a large mangrove landscape that is actually below sea level. Hence, drainage has always been an issue, particularly when the drains and canals are clogged up or when a storm passes through, leaving debris in its wake. In light of the fact that we are in the hurricane season, the Belize City Council is looking at the issue of drainage again and the project this time involves two entities. Mayor Bernard Wagner told News Five that the work entails the use of heavy-duty equipment.

“My team right now is working along with the M.I.D.H. in the pumping station. I think they’re putting in those screws as we speak this week or early next week to really get that type of apparatus off the ground so that we could not go back into those canals – Zeitown Canal, East and West Canals, clean them or take out whatever sludge is in there so that they are better prepared now for when hurricane.”
