B.E.L. Investigates Data Leak Following Cyber Attacks
The Belize Electricity Limited has been hit by a cyber-attack and their attackers have leaked confidential, transactional company information online. This morning, the utility company issued a release informing its customers that in May it stepped up its cyber security measures in response to a cyber-attack on its IT network. The release went on to say that on Thursday, B.E.L. received a report indicating that company information was leaked from a website operated by the hackers believed to have launched the attack on their IT network. One online cyber security platform called ThreatMon has published a twitter report stating that a ransomware group called Ragnar Locker has added Belize Electricity Limited to its list of victims. The report says that after giving Belize Electricity Limited’s management a deadline to respond the ransomware, three hundred and fifty-five gigabytes of data were shared online. B.E.L. has confirmed that there was no leaked data from the company’s critical IT software and database management systems that contain customer and financial datasets or from their operations technology network that monitors and controls their grid. We will continue to follow.
